This week we celebrate Simchat Torah and re-start our annual cycle of Torah readings. The content in Bereshit is probably some of the most well-known of the Torah - creation, the Garden of Eden, the expulsion, Cain and Able...While there are many intersting things to catch my attention, I am particularly fixed on the idea of the world beginning anew. As we wait and hope for the return of the remaining Israeli hostages, the idea of starting afresh and the theme of the world being newly created feels all the more meaningful. On the very first day, light was created, and separated from darkness. God created evening and morning, dark and light. The darkness was there first, but then God decided there should also be light, these two parts. I like to look at as that even when times feel dark, there is still light to be found.

With this in mind, I wanted to suggest focusing on dark and light, night and morning. For

dark/night, I was thinking of a chocolate chocolate cake, i.e. chocolate layer cake with chocolate filling and chocolate icing. It's a delicious way to think of nighttime. You can make it from scratch or make it easy on yourself and go for the box of cake mix and purchased icing.

For light or day, the most prominent indicator of this diffrence in the time of day is the sun. So, perhaps make Ruhama's Sunshine Chicken. If you don't know Ruhama, you're in for a treat when you watch her cooking videos. She brings a bit of sunshine with her.
